Most of us long for a better marriage, and that longing is to be applauded. However, how might some go about improving the relationship?
A husband has a need to be respected by his wife. That is what Paul teaches in Ephesians 5:33. As well, a wife has a need to be honored (respected) by her husband.
The love and respect connection is real—make no mistake. When I was reading Ephesians 5 one day in 1998, after having studied and taught from this chapter many times in my twenty years of preaching, God revealed this connection to me and it blew me away.
People who think culturally, not biblically oftentimes stumble over the idea of unconditional respect.
"My wife and I have been really struggling with our communication and our relationship; feels like we are two ships sailing in the night, which concerns me. I know I am responsible for what comes out of my mouth, which reveals what is in my heart. I have been trying to take responsibility for that and ask for forgiveness."
Wherever I teach about goodwill, I am asked, "How do you reconcile the concept of goodwill with the total depravity of the human heart?" Some people go so far as to say,
In the past several weeks I have covered two vital truths that can help the Love and Respect couple develop mutual understanding and good communication: 1. The mouth matters (what comes out of the mouth depends on what is in the heart).
Emerson’s Reply, Part Three - A few days ago I presented a question that came to me in an email, concerning decision-making in marriage. Please read my two previous posts for Parts One and Two. Concerning the suggestion that husbands and wives “Wait for God to change her/him on the matter” when they are at a stalemate, here is another important point.
Emerson’s Reply, Part Two - Please read the previous post which presents the question on Decision-Making, and includes Part One of my reply. Today I’ll address the second suggestion from the wives: “Wait for God to change her/him on the matter.”
