No two people will agree with each other all the time. Conflict doesn’t mean the marriage is in trouble, and disagreement doesn’t mean you married the wrong person.
You’ve likely heard me talk about “when the issue is no longer the issue.” What begins as a normal difference of opinion can quickly leave both spouses feeling unloved and completely disrespected.
Courtship and the first few months of marriage is a unique time in a couple’s relationship. We are usually focused on our partner’s strengths and rarely aware of the weaknesses or quirks that all of us have.
Sadly, many a man will not include his wife in decisions because he fears her input as an attempt to control him rather than as her desire to be his helpful teammate. Not only is this man extremely insecure (which calls into question his manhood), but some would call him imprudent.
Over the years, I have heard from many women who feel they have more of a right to speak harshly and disrespectfully to their husband than he does to speak unlovingly toward her.
When you feel helpless in your marriage, where do you turn? Is this moment of feeling weak an opportunity to encounter the power of God on your behalf? If so, how do you receive this inner power? PRAY: Lord, Your Word says that Your grace is sufficient for me and that Your power is made perfect in my weakness.
When anxious about the stresses swirling about your marriage, do you experience God’s peace in your heart? If not, what can you do? PRAY: Lord, I know You say in Your Word, “My peace I give unto you.” Right now, right here, I ask You to grant me Your peace.
In the midst of your troubles (and all have troubles in marriage according to the Bible), do you feel God is far away or near? Do you feel connected to Him? If He feels absent and not present, what can you do? PRAY: Lord, in 1 Corinthians 7:28, You reveal that there will be trouble in marriage.
Part 2 once again asked the question, “Who is responsible for the success...or failure…of your marriage?” Not every couple wants the pastor to help. Some have secret agendas to justify their actions. Unscrupulous Actions I’ve often thought about the people who have made confessions to me after they ended a marriage. Though they did not come to me early on, I’d hear transparent comments about their previous manipulation.
