Sadly, many a man will not include his wife in decisions because he fears her input as an attempt to control him rather than as her desire to be his helpful teammate. Not only is this man extremely insecure (which calls into question his manhood), but some would call him imprudent.
Have you ever considered what sets humans apart from the other creatures on earth? The answer lies in a remarkable phenomenon called consciousness.
Over the years, I have heard from many women who feel they have more of a right to speak harshly and disrespectfully to their husband than he does to speak unlovingly toward her.
A minor unannounced U-turn after church escalates into hours of tears and despair for one wife, revealing how everyday preferences quickly spiral into the Crazy Cycle of missing love and respect.
As a new believer in Christ at age sixteen, I recall one night going outside my home in Peoria, Illinois, and crying out to God to show Himself to me to confirm that what I believed about Him was true. “Just appear to me!” I begged of God.
I believe God has something very good to tell you about what He sees you doing in your marriage, but He chooses to withhold this information until later. I base these comments on a story about a widow. What happens with this unmarried woman applies to the married! Let me explain.
I appreciate hearing from couples, especially those in ministry. Even those of us in marriage ministry can get on the Crazy Cycle or become disillusioned in our marriages. Jeff and Elizabeth share what profoundly changed their marriage when Elizabeth had finally “had it!”My husband and I were married in 1992 and from the very beginning, we attended marriage conferences, attended HomeBuilder groups, and then led HomeBuilder groups for 6 years or so. But one day God revealed a life-changing truth to me, and that is what I would like to share with you.
My mother was a single parent working full time with very little left over for anything extra. Yet she managed to give to me and my siblings in ways that left us feeling loved and valued. Having little, giving more As Emerson and I recently sat at the Dairy Queen, I was reminded again of my mother’s generosity.
“Emerson, I hate your use of Pink and Blue. You stereotype each gender when you refer to wives looking through pink sunglasses and husbands wearing blue hearing aids! Why do you do this?" My mom had three businesses. She taught thousands of kids to swim, dance, and learn their ABC’s at her pre-school. In those settings she would say to an expectant mother, “Think pink but blue will do.”
Q: I have been in a live-in relationship for a number of years. We have recently been following your love and respect advice because of a crisis, but we are not married and have no marriage plans (due to a lack of trust issue regarding a one-night stand that my boyfriend recently committed). I am a New Believer and am wondering from a spiritual standpoint as to how my relationship is viewed by God's Word. My boyfriend feels that splitting up is not necessary, but I am not sure. Can you shed any light on this for us? Dr. E says: Thank you for honestly sharing your situation and your heart.
We receive many emails from people who have hit rock bottom. It seems that there is no hope when every area of the marriage is “dead.” But read what this wife shared with us and be encouraged that God can do more than you can imagine! We hit rock bottom.I want to start by saying thank you. Your book has had a very significant role in saving and repairing my very damaged marriage.
I remember sitting on my deck many years ago very discouraged as a mother. One of my children had made a bad decision. Well, make that two children. I won't go into the details or their identity but it was uncanny that these two situations were almost more than I could bear at the time. And they were totally unrelated.A lot of questions went through my mind and heart that day.Would this determine my self worth?
Few people who claim they believe in God would say He is a dictator. For instance, in marriage they would never argue that God is unfair and mean for His command in Ephesians 5:33 to husbands to love and wives to respect. They are an exception.Instead, they creatively claim God is love and He would never expect them to do something in marriage at this stage with an indifferent and insolent spouse.
