It is never too late, and never too early, to build your marriage on something that holds. Love & Respect is the framework Dr. Emerson Eggerichs drew out of Ephesians 5:33. A wife needs love. A husband needs respect. When either need goes unmet, two good people react in ways neither intended. It has helped countless couples find their way back to each other. It can start with one of you.

Where are you starting from?

What you'll walk away with:

a christian cross
Why Christ at the center of your marriage changes everything — not as a concept, but as a daily reality
an open book
The two needs at the core of every marriage, rooted in Ephesians 5:33, and why ignoring either one creates conflict
two arrows in a circle showing the crazy cycle
Why you and your spouse react to each other the way you do — and how to stop the cycle before it spins
two lines merging into one traveling upward
How to motivate your spouse toward love and respect without pressure, manipulation, or waiting for them to go first
a heart with a heart beat monitor line
What to do when your efforts aren't being returned and how to stay the course without losing yourself
a hand with a heart hovering above it showing care
How to forgive, repair, and renew your commitment to each other when things have gone wrong

Together or Alone:

DOING THIS TOGETHER
Read these together and talk honestly about whether you each believe God is for your marriage. You may answer that differently, and it is better to know now than five modules in.
DOING THIS ALONE
You do not need your spouse's agreement to begin. Who you are in Christ is not something your marriage gives you or takes away. Start here on your own and let this settle who you are before you work on what you do.

01

Where It Starts: Christ and Scripture

This is some text inside of a div block.
Arrow
This is not marriage advice. It is God's design, revealed in His Word. When Christ is at the center, you are not working on your marriage alone.

Most people arrive here looking for something that works. That is a good place to start. But the reason love and respect works is not that it is a clever technique. God designed marriage this way and said so in His Word. Before we look at why couples react to each other, two things are worth settling: who God says you are, and whether you trust Scripture to be true. Everything in the next five modules rests on those two answers.

If God is truly for your marriage, what would change in how you approached your spouse this week?
02

Why We React: The Crazy Cycle

This is some text inside of a div block.
Arrow
Without love, she reacts without respect. Without respect, he reacts without love. Understanding this cycle is the first step to breaking it.

Most conflict in marriage isn't about what it looks like on the surface. It's about two people with good intentions stepping on each other's deepest needs without realizing it. This module names what's actually happening — and once you see it, you can't unsee it.

When was the last time you and your spouse got on the Crazy Cycle? Looking back, what need was going unmet on each side?
03

The Two Key Ingredients: Love and Respect

This is some text inside of a div block.
Arrow
She needs love the way she needs air. He needs respect the same way. Ephesians 5:33 is not a suggestion about marriage. It is the design.

Every couple already knows love matters. Far fewer have heard that a husband carries a need just as deep, and that Scripture names it directly. Ephesians 5:33 gives a wife a command she has rarely heard preached: respect your husband. This module is about why those two words are not interchangeable, why unconditional matters in both directions, and why meeting a need your spouse cannot easily put into words changes everything that follows.

The last time your spouse hurt you, was the wound about feeling unloved or feeling disrespected? What does your answer tell you about your own deepest need?
04

How We Motivate Each Other: The Energizing Cycle

This is some text inside of a div block.
Arrow
His love motivates her respect. Her respect motivates his love. The same cycle that spins you apart can spin you together.

The Crazy Cycle explains why marriages spin down. The Energizing Cycle explains how they spin up. Emerson gives each spouse a specific playbook, C-O-U-P-L-E for husbands and C-H-A-I-R-S for wives. These are not personality tips. They are the six things each spouse most consistently reports feeling loved or respected by. The one thing that determines whether it works is motive. Done to get something back, it becomes manipulation. Done unto Christ, it works.

Which of the six do you think your spouse would say they receive least from you? Ask them, and be willing to hear the answer without explaining yourself.
05

When Your Spouse Doesn't Respond: The Rewarded Cycle

This is some text inside of a div block.
Arrow
His love blesses regardless of her respect. Her respect blesses regardless of his love. This is the cycle that does not depend on your spouse at all.

Some spouses respond. Some do not, at least not yet. If your marriage only works when your spouse cooperates, it will always feel fragile. The Rewarded Cycle moves the center of gravity: you love or respect unto Christ, and your obedience is seen and rewarded by Him whether or not your spouse ever changes. This is the hardest module in the track, and it is the one that keeps people from giving up.

If your spouse never changed, would you still want to be the kind of person this module describes? What would that cost you, and what would it be worth?
06

Forgiveness, Repair, and Renewed Commitment

This is some text inside of a div block.
Arrow
You will fail each other. The question is not whether, but what happens in the hour after. Forgiveness is not forgetting. It is deciding to stop keeping the record.

Everything in this track assumes two imperfect people. You will step on each other's air hose. You will react. The couples who last are not the ones who stop failing, they are the ones who repair quickly and completely. This module covers how to actually forgive, how to apologize in a way that lands, why unforgiveness costs you more than it costs your spouse, and what it looks like to recommit when you are ready to begin again.

Is there something you have technically forgiven but still bring up? What would it take to stop keeping that record?
Real Testimonies
"You have given voice to what I have been feeling over the last 15 years of our marriage. Frustrated at not being able to verbalize my feelings, I withdrew and stonewalled until I would blow up."
Husband
"Instead of jumping on the crazy cycle, I've begun to recognize the signs and symptoms of the crazy cycle and it has changed how I respond. I have seen a change in my husband and it’s amazing."
Wife
"The divorce papers were in the car. We were separated, we'd tried counseling, prayer, and after 16 years I knew it was over. We are reconciled. I've stopped the divorce."
